HOFFA MEETS WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP

HOFFA MEETS WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP

TO DISCUSS PENSION SECURITY

(WASHINGTON) – International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa and International Vice President John Murphy met with President Donald Trump today at the White House to seek support for the union’s efforts to ensure pension security for Teamster members and retirees. They also discussed other issues of significant importance to Teamsters and their families.

"It is important that President Trump understand the urgent need to address the pension crisis our nation is facing," Hoffa said. "We are pursuing efforts to establish a path to solvency for pension funds in crisis. We had a very good conversation and are looking forward to a continuing dialogue."

Murphy has been leading Teamster efforts to address the growing threat to Teamster members’ retirement security.

"Over the past two years, we have worked to develop a viable legislative solution to the pension crisis," Murphy said. "As part of this process, it is paramount that we secure bipartisan support. It is important that the administration understands the scope of this crisis and the impact it could have on millions of Americans."

(HOUSTON) – Delivery drivers working for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits (Southern Glazer) in the Houston area have voted to join Teamsters Local 988. The majority of the 59-driver unit voted in favor of joining the union.

“I am happy that we won because not only did we join the Teamsters, but the union has negotiated other good contracts at Southern Glazer locations,” said Daniel Watkins, an employee for the past nine years.

Teamster members from other locations of Southern Glazer visited with and gave encouragement to the Houston drivers and were instrumental in the successful vote.

“We had great assistance from members and the leadership of Local 853 in Oakland, Calif.,” said Joachin Galvan, a business agent at Local 988. “For our drivers, hearing about contracts won by Teamsters in other locations of Southern Glazer was important, and I think made a difference in the vote’s outcome.”

“We will support the drivers and work with them to negotiate their contract,” said Robert Mele, President of Local 988. “Having work rules in writing in a collective bargaining agreement brings stability to workplaces – and we look forward to providing that for these Southern Glazer employees.”

The Houston workers join over 64,000 brewery and soft drink workers in the U.S. and Canada who are members of the Teamsters Brewery and Soft Drink Workers Conference. HOFFA: WITHDRAWAL FROM TPP THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR U.S. TRADE POLICY

Trump Administration Signals New Approach to Trade Policy

(WASHINGTON) – The following is a statement from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa on President Donald Trump signing an executive order to formally withdraw the United States from the Trans Pacific Partnership. Withdrawal

"Today, President Trump made good on his campaign promise to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. With this decision, the president has taken the first step toward fixing 30 years of bad trade policies that have cost working Americans millions of good-paying jobs.

"The Teamsters Union has been on the frontline of the fight to stop destructive trade deals like the TPP, China PNTR, CAFTA and NAFTA for decades. Millions of working men and women saw their jobs leave the country as free trade policies undermined our manufacturing industry. We hope that President Trump’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Jan. 31 opens a real dialogue about fixing the flawed NAFTA.

"We take this development as a positive sign that President Trump will continue to fulfill his campaign promises in regard to trade policy reform and instruct the USTR to negotiate future agreements that protect American workers and industry."

HOFFA: TEAMSTERS WILL WORK WITH PRESIDENT-ELECT ON WORKER ISSUES

Infrastructure, Trade, Retirement Security Are Common Interests

(WASHINGTON) – The following is a statement from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa about the election of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States:

“On behalf of the 1.4 million Teamsters, I want to congratulate President-elect Trump on his victory. Americans have voted, and we respect their choice at the ballot box. The Teamsters will work with President-elect Trump on numerous issues essential to the nation’s workers in an effort to improve the lives of millions who continue to struggle to make ends meet.

“For more than a year, the Teamsters have been pushing a platform that prioritizes building, maintaining and repairing the nation’s faltering infrastructure – a stated priority of President-elect Trump. U.S. roads, rails, energy plants and water systems have been ignored for far too long. This country needs a plan to invest more, and we will work with the Trump Administration to craft a solution.

“Additionally, the President-elect has made promises to the American people on trade and manufacturing that are important to our members. We are ready to work with him to find common ground that will benefit working families.

“Finally, the Teamsters understand that workers who invest in their retirement through pensions, other savings and Social Security deserve to be able to rely on their nest eggs in their golden years. Again, we are ready to work with him to formulate a plan that allows seniors to live with dignity.”

UPS - withdraw from ALEC

Teamsters, Activists Deliver Thousands of Signed Petitions to UPS Calling for Withdrawal from ALEC

Delegations in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Call on UPS to End Association with Anti-Union, Anti-Worker Organization

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Teamsters Union representatives in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Ga. led delegations that included environmental and community activists that delivered thousands signed petitions to UPS offices in both cities. The 75,000 signed petitions collected call on the corporation to withdraw its membership in the controversial American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). View photos from the action, here.

The Teamsters Union represents more than 250,000 members at UPS and UPS Freight. UPS remains an active member of ALEC despite the organization’s anti-worker and anti-union agenda that seeks to undermine and weaken worker protections. Representatives from Teamsters Local 639 in Washington and Local 728 in Atlanta led the delegations.

“There is absolutely no good reason why UPS should continue its membership in ALEC,” said Ken Hall, Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer and Package Division Director. “ALEC is an organization that is committed to destroying every protection and gain middle class working families have fought so hard to secure. It is difficult for our 250,000 UPS members to believe the company has their best interest in mind while it continues to support ALEC.”

The signatures were collected during a massive petition drive staged by the Teamsters, Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, Stand Up to ALEC, Jobs With Justice and the American Postal Workers Union. As of August 2015, more than 120 major corporations and organizations have publically announced they no longer work with ALEC due to the organization’s stance on many controversial issues, including Amazon.com, Coca Cola, Apple, McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, and just this week, American Electric Power.

Randy Brown, President of Teamsters Local 728 in Atlanta, Ga. and former UPS driver, led the delegation that delivered the petitions to the UPS World Headquarters. Brown expressed his disappointment in UPS’ continued refusal to leave ALEC.

“UPS’ membership in ALEC is disturbing to me on a personal level,” Brown said “How can a company with the largest unionized workforce in the country participate in an organization that attacks the very workers that make UPS so successful? It’s time for UPS to do what’s right and leave ALEC.”

Protect our Pensions
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
k
We are extremely pleased to share the news that the Department of Treasury has rejected the application to cut pension benefits proposed by the Central States Fund. While this is a great victory for retirees, we still have a long fight ahead of us to ensure that retirees’ earned benefits and quality of life are protected. Both the Keep Our Pension Promises Act (KOPPA) and the Pension Accountability Act (PAA) would help secure retiree benefits but they are stalled in Congress. We need you to reach out to your Representative and Senators to ask them to support these bills and help move them through Congress. Go to the International Brotherhood of Teamster website: www.teamster.org ! Get involved TODAY!
k
S. 1631/ H.R. 2844, KOPPA, sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders in the Senate and Representative Marcy Kaptur in the House of Representatives, would restore the anti-cutback rule which, until passage of the 2014 “CRomnibus,” prevented cuts from being made to accrued pension benefits. KOPPA also helps strengthen multiemployer pensions by creating a “Legacy Fund” within the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation to address the issue of underfunded “orphaned” participants. It does this by closing two tax loopholes that only benefit the wealthiest members of society. It also helps multiemployer pension plans by making pension obligations a higher priority in bankruptcy proceedings.
k
Other legislation to assist retirees would give plan participants a meaningful voice when plans apply to cut benefits under the current laws. S. 2147/ H.R. 4029, the Pension Accountability Act, sponsored by Senator Portman and Representatives David Joyce and Tim Ryan, would require a majority, binding vote from plan participants before any cuts may be made. Additionally, under the current framework, any unreturned ballots are counted as in favor of benefit cuts, PAA would only count those ballots that were returned adding fairness to a system which currently seems to have a deck stacked against retirees.
k
While we are overjoyed by the news that Central States’ application to cut the pension benefits has been rejected by the Treasury, we must still fix the funds so that retiree’s earned benefits are secure for many years to come. We urge you to email your Senators and Representative to ask them to help move S. 1631/ H.R. 2844, the Keep Our Pension Promises Act and S. 2147/ H.R. 4029, the Pension Accountability Act forward.
